The Annapurna Region Is the most popular trekking region in Nepal, it is a combination of some truly outstanding mountains and the accessibility of the Annapurna's that has ensured this.
Around sixty percent of all people who trek in Nepal do so in the region. Many of the trails follow or intersect the ancient trading route between Nepal and Tibet that in time gone by was a major salt route. The region is dissected by the Kali Gandaki Valley Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world. The wealth of well-established trading and trekking lodges along with good road and air links with Kathmandu, have also played a major role in the great popularity of trekking here.
Annapurna region is situated north of the beautiful lake town of Pokhara around 200 kms west of Kathmandu. Pokhara can be reached either a stunning six hours overland or a twenty-five minute air flight.
The Annapurna Region is in fact recognized as the most diverse protected area on earth.
The region contains mountains of over 8000 mtrs and the deepest river gorge in the world. Due to the extremes of elevation a remarkable diversity of flora and fauna is found; in the southern part of the region there is a lot of sub tropical lowland forest ,mainly comprising of oak, bamboo and rhododendron, in the northern part of the region high alpine meadows and windswept plateaus near the borders of Tibet are found.. The Grey Languor monkey and a variety of cats and rodents are found at lower levels. The endangered Snow Leopard and The Himalayan Black Bear inhabit the higher altitudes of (4500mtrs +); Over 400 species of birds have been recorded in the region.
