Lower Dolpo Trek | Trekking in Lower Dolpo

The Lower Dolpo Region is remote and rugged and a natural and unspoilt area that lies in far western Nepal in The Shey-Phoksundo National Park. The Dolpo region lies within a restricted area and a special permit is needed to trek here. The Lower Dolpo trek is not an easy one so you need to be in good shape physically .
Shey Phoksundo National Park contains the beautiful Shey Phoksundo lake that lies within fantastic scenery that also offers a wealth of fascinating ancient cultures. The park is home to some extremely rare animals and plants that are particular to the region..
The trek itself completes a circuit with two special highlights being Shey Phoksundo lake and the Tarap valley. The trail swings north just east of Tankot and ascends the  Tarap Valley for around two days. The trail crosses and recrosses the Tarap Khola (river) before  finally reaching Dho Tarap, a settlement at the top of the valley. The valley contains many ancient items of religious significance and there are both  Bonpo (a religion that predates Buddhism) and Buddhist temples along the way.
Dho Tarap (4000 meters) is a great place to spend some time. The settlement is inhabited mainly by Magars and Gurungs on what is the flat upper valley floor, along with the Tibetans who also share the valley.
From Dho Tarap two high passes must be negotiated in order to reach Ringmo and Phoksundo Lake. The crossing is normally completed in two days but on occasions  it has to be extended  if there are unfavorable weather conditions.
Phoksundo is a fairly large crystal blue lake that is fed by glaciers of the high mountains that stretch down to its shores.  We spend some time on the shores of the lake amongst the beautiful forests and crystal clear high waterfalls. A further two days are spent trekking back to Juphal airstrip.
Lower Dolpo is a preserved eco-system that contains a wild and wonderful variety of flora and fauna, including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard.
